Jude Law Explains Those Cheeky, Bare-Bummed Opening Scenes in The Young Pope

While it’s certainly not the first time Jude Law has bared himself — spiritually and physically — on camera, but usually he hasn’t stepped straight into papal robes after.

As a controversial new head of the Catholic Church in the new HBO series The Young Pope, Law strips down for not one but two scenes within the first minute.

Of the risqué depiction of his holiness, Law tells PEOPLE: “What Paolo wanted to demonstrate early on was this idea of him being — you see the man, his naked form and then the costume, as it were, the outfit that he then puts on that, if you like, comes to define him.”

And though Law’s Pope Pius XII (né Lenny Belardo) shows that one, brief glimpse of that naked vulnerability, the rest of the series shows him ruling the Vatican with an increasingly iron fist — a character trait the 44-year-old actor admits he wasn’t entirely

“There aren’t too many qualities that I would say I share with him,” says Law. “Certainly some opinions of his and the treatment of certain people . It was not hard, but it’s not always nice playing someone who’s so brutal. But that’s what it’s always like. If you play someone, you have to understand them and love them for all of their qualities — good and bad.”

For that task, the two-time Oscar nominee found a very specific, ritualistic way to access the psyche of Lenny, an American orphan raised in an extremely conservative Catholic parish.

“I was really interested to work out a list of rules that Lenny used to maneuver through the terrain of the Vatican,” he reveals. “It was a process of creating survival techniques that went back to when he was a boy — who he chose to shut out, who he chose to let in and why, how much he reveal to who when. And it was literally a list of rules that I had tacked up in my dressing room and looked at every day.”

The Young Pope airs Sundays and Mondays (9 p.m. ET) on HBO.

Fourth of November Collaborates With New York Knicks on Capsule Collection

Kareem “Biggs” Burke continues to pull from his roots for his apparel endeavors.
The Roc-A-Fella records cofounder, who owns the denim brand Fourth of November, has teamed with the New York Knicks on a limited-edition capsule collection in celebration of the basketball team’s 70th anniversary.
“As a real New Yorker it’s an absolute honor to collaborate with the Knicks,” said Burke.
The collection includes a classic varsity jacket made of Melton wool and lambskin, and a snapback. Both feature the Fourth of November logo along with ’70 and ’73, which indicate the years the Knicks won an NBA Championship. The jacket, which retails for $ 350, and the snapback, which retails for $ 46, will be sold exclusively at the Madison Square Garden team store. Only 70 pieces of each style will be produced.
When working with Roc-A-Fella, which was acquired by Def Jam in 2004, Burke helped grow Rocawear, the label’s streetwear brand, into an almost $ 700 million business, and although he had no plans of reentering the fashion business, when a childhood friend introduced him to Fourth of November, which was founded by Carlos Rodriguez, he joined the team to help them grow the company. The line, which consists of denim and varsity jackets,

We’ll Always Have Paris: Hilton Talks Biz at Moschino

HILTON SCOTT LOVE: It’s no secret Paris Hilton and Jeremy Scott go way back and, once again, the latter received the BFF treatment. “I’m so proud of him; it’s incredible what he’s achieved,” said Hilton at the Moschino show, his first men’s collection to be shown in Milan, where she sat front row with Sofia Richie, the younger sister of Paris’ old pal Nicole. “I’ve known him since I was 15,” she elaborated.
While she continued to strike poses even with no photographers around, Hilton actually is keeping busy and growing her fashion, accessories and beauty collections. “I have 19 product lines and I am launching my 22nd fragrance,” she proudly claimed. Expected to attend the Plein Sport and Dsquared2 shows, she is also building her lucrative career as a DJ. To wit, she was gearing up to DJ at the opening of the Philipp Plein and Plein Sport flagship on Sunday. “It’s fashion week — let’s party,” she said, which could be her life’s motto.

Dsquared2 Fall 2017

A hot (vodka and berry) toddy and buffalo-plaid blanket helped make up for the late start and long-haul, no-frills location: a gutted factory on the outskirts of Milan. Not forgetting the mood-booster of a show.
At a time when everyone wants to be Canadian, Dsquared2’s Dean and Dan Caten couldn’t be prouder. A giant red maple leaf glowed on the building’s facade, while the collection deliriously tumbled together country codes.
The high-energy show trod a fun apres-ski-meets-a-night-at-the-opera storyline, with as its opening act a crystal-loaded gown slung with a thick wool cardigan and cinched with a hiking belt.
Looks were super layered up, with sequined lumberjack shirts – the grunge status symbol – morphing from appendages tied at the waist on men’s looks to full-on skirts in the women’s section.
The Catens even coined an albeit unpalatable term for their glamor-meets-grunge, mountain-high romp combining the feminine and the rugged: “glunge.”
As designers get into the co-ed groove, collections are becoming increasingly incestuous. The Catens’ first go at it was no exception with the Liberty prints on pretty Edwardian-style prairie dresses resurfacing on parkas, and jewel-like red-and-white crystal embroidery on gowns also forming a glittering crust on men’s pants, jackets and backpacks.
‘Tis the season for outerwear

A Nostalgic Tom Ford Hits GQ Party in Milan

The Milan Fashion Week crowd hit T’a Milano — a trendy bistro opened by the same-name heritage Milanese chocolate brand — for Saturday night’s GQ bash. The hosts had even whipped up branded boxes of fruit-filled chocolate beans for the event, though the ever-disciplined Tom Ford declined to sample them. The designer, who has been busy promoting his latest movie “Nocturnal Animals,” is in town for his men’s presentation. “I’ve been coming to Milan since the mid-Eighties, even before. It’s very nostalgic because Richard [Buckley] and I used to live here and I’ve had offices here for a long time. There’s something I remember about everything. I had dinner at Il Baretto the other night, which looks the same as it has always looked,” he said.
Nick Jonas, who had attended the Emporio Armani show earlier in the day, and models Johannes Huebl and Andrés Velencoso also attended the event. Gaia Trussardi and Kean Etro also attended.

Kean Etro, Constanza Trussardi Etro and Jim Nelson

In the crowd, footwear designer Giuseppe Zanotti, who is also here presenting his men’s collection, said next week he’ll be heading to L.A. for a party with Jennifer Lopez hosted by Neiman Marcus to celebrate their collaboration. A second

Food Politics: What Everyone Needs to Know®

Food Politics: What Everyone Needs to Know®

The politics of food is changing fast. In rich countries, obesity is now a more serious problem than hunger. Consumers once satisfied with cheap and convenient food now want food that is also safe, nutritious, fresh, and grown by local farmers using fewer chemicals. Heavily subsidized and underregulated commercial farmers are facing stronger push back from environmentalists and consumer activists, and food companies are under the microscope. Meanwhile, agricultural success in Asia has spurred i

‘Hidden Figures’ Continues Its Reign At The Box Office While ‘Monster Trucks’ Bombs

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – It’s bombs away at the multiplexes.

Family film “Monster Trucks” tanked when it debuted over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, while Ben Affleck’s “Live by Night” and Martin Scorsese’s “Silence” suffered moribund national expansions. Their failures will lead to tens of millions of dollars in red ink for the studios that backed them. “Sleepless,” an action-thriller with Jamie Foxx, also suffered an underwhelming opening, getting lost in the onslaught of new releases.

“There’s almost an unprecedented number of films out there,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. “It’s got to be somewhat daunting and overwhelming for moviegoers.”

Amidst the carnage, Fox and Chernin Entertainment’s “Hidden Figures” retained its box office crown in its second weekend of wide release, earning $ 20.5 million for the weekend and a projected $ 25.3 million for the long weekend. That will push its total to $ 59.7 million. The historical drama about African-American NASA workers during the early days of the space program has been one of the biggest breakouts of awards season.

“Hidden Figures” faced stiff competition from Lionsgate’s “La La Land,” riding high after sweeping the Golden Globe Awards, and STX’s “The Bye Bye Man,” which earned $ 14.5 million and $ 13.4 million, respectively. “La La Land” is widely expected to dominate the Oscar nominations. The musical about lovestruck Angelenos should finish the four-day weekend with another $ 17.5 million in domestic receipts, which would bring its stateside total to more than $ 77 million.

“The Bye Bye Man’s” strong reception is welcome news for STX, which had expected the film to open to roughly $ 10 million. The horror movie about college students grappling with a deadly supernatural figure cost less than $ 8 million to produce. It should make $ 15 million over the four-day holiday. Studio executives said they weren’t afraid of the crush of new releases heading into the weekend, because they felt they were the only film targeted to younger females. STX also wanted to release the picture on Friday the 13th, a marketing hook for scary movies.

“We knew we were going to be able to get that core audience of females,” said Kevin Grayson, STX’s domestic distribution president. “Not only did they go on Friday, they continued to go all weekend.”

Heading into the weekend, most analysts expected CBS Films and Lionsgate’s “Patriots Day” to put up more of a fight. The drama about the Boston Marathon Bombing earned $ 12 million after moving from seven theaters to 3,120 locations. It could make $ 14.3 million over the four-day stretch. That’s below projections ― analysts expected the film to earn as much as $ 18 million. However, the studios believe that “Patriots Day” could benefit from enthusiastic word-of-mouth. Audiences gave the film a rare A+ CinemaScore.

“Monster Trucks’” failure seemed preordained. Last year, Paramount took a $ 115 million write-down on the film. “Monster Trucks’” reception justified that fiscal white-flag waving. It opened to a pallid $ 10.5 million and a projected $ 14.1 million over the holiday, a disastrous result given its $ 125 million budget.

“The movie works for the audience it’s intended to work for,” said Megan Colligan, Paramount’s marketing and distribution head. “It did really well in the midwest and south. It was over 50 percent kids. The balance was good between boys and girls…without a whole lot of competition, it will keep plugging along.”

Paramount has hit a rough patch. The studio was embroiled in a corporate power struggle that pitted the controlling Redstone family against Philippe Dauman, the former chairman of Paramount’s parent company Viacom. The Redstones ultimately prevailed, but the pressure is now on Paramount chief Brad Grey to prove he can deliver more hits. The studio scored with “Fences” and “Arrival,” but lost millions on the likes of “Allied,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,” and “Ben-Hur.”

“Live by Night’s” troubles will hit Affleck hard. He directed, produced, and wrote the Dennis LeHane adaptation, and took a starring role as a charismatic rum runner. Warner Bros. is releasing the $ 65 million production. It earned a sallow $ 5.4 million and should end the four-day holiday with just over $ 6 million, which more or less leaves the gangster picture on the slab. Affleck should be on firmer commercial ground reprising his Dark Knight role in “Justice League” later this year.

Open Road’s “Sleepless” didn’t fare too well either, although it cost significantly less than “Live by Night” and “Monster Trucks.” The $ 30 million production stars Foxx as a morally compromised cop whose extracurricular activities endanger his son. It kicked off with a meager $ 8.5 million and should end the long weekend with $ 10.1 million in the till. The studio says that “Sleepless” will make its way into the black because Open Road covered its financial exposure by selling foreign distribution rights and through tax rebates.

“Given our economics, this $ 10 million opening on ‘Sleepless’ will certainly become profitable for Open Road,” said a spokeswoman.

Then there’s “Silence,” a decades-in-the-making religious drama. Scorsese struggled for years to cobble together the financing for this story about Jesuit priests who risk torture and death to spread the gospel in feudal Japan, but audiences seemed to have little appetite for his rumination on faith. “Silence” expanded from 51 theaters to 747 locations, earning just over $ 2 million for the long weekend. The $ 50 million film was financed independently. Paramount is distributing the picture.

“Marty Scorsese is one of the greatest living filmmakers,” said Colligan. “He’s earned the right to independently finance a movie and make the movie he wants to make. This is a complicated, beautiful film, one that movie critics have named the best of the year and one that will be taught in film schools for years. It needs to be judged on its merits.”

Holdovers “Sing” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” continued to show strength, with both films earning roughly $ 13.8 million. “Sing,” the latest collaboration between the “Despicable Me” team of Universal and Illumination, has earned $ 237.2 million stateside. “Rogue One” is now the top-grossing 2016 release with more than $ 500 million in receipts. It will cross the $ 1 billion mark at the global box office this week.

12 Things Every ‘Type A’ Person Wants You To Know

2017-01-12-1484257821-2930246-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP.jpeg

Robert Frost once said, “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” He certainly wasn’t thinking about Type A people when he said that. They barrel into the office like they’re racing for a pot of gold, and they never seem to lose momentum. It’s as if they’re driven by a motor that never shuts off.

We each have our own understanding of what it means to have a Type A personality, but what does this term really mean and where did it come from? It actually started in a waiting room shared by a pair of cardiologists. The doctors noticed that their chairs didn’t have wear on the backs as expected–the wear was only visible on the front edge of the seats and the armrests, suggesting that patients were literally waiting on the edge of their seats, ready to jump up the second their names were called.

So, the cardiologists–Doctors Friedman and Rosenman–wanted to find out if the strange wear pattern on their chairs was because impatient people are more prone to heart disease. They discovered that their hunch was correct. They also found that people’s personalities tend to lean in one of two directions, which they labeled Type A and Type B.

2017-01-12-1484257884-1847761-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP2.jpeg

Most think of Type A people as driven and highly strung and Type B people as carefree and even-keeled, but there’s so much more to it. Type As, in particular, are often misunderstood, as we just don’t understand the motivation behind their behavior.

To fully grasp what it means to be Type A, you need to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Don’t take my word for it–let’s see what they have to say:

1. We believe that winning is the only option.
We’re really hard on ourselves. Our desire to do our best often morphs into a desire to be the best. After all, if someone else does something better than us, then we mustn’t have been trying hard enough, right? This ensures that even the most mundane activities become a competition.

2. We live and die by our goals.
We don’t do anything “just because.” There’s an end aim for everything. That morning cup of coffee? The goal is to wake up. Half an hour of Pokemon Go at lunch? It’s about squeezing in some exercise and capturing more Pokemon than our friend down the hall. Heaven help anyone who slows us down or gets in our way. We’re nothing if we don’t reach our goals.

3. We’re always stressed.
Achieving our goals is so important to us that we often get stressed out about our progress. It’s that specter of wasted time or missed opportunities hanging over our heads that gets us all riled up, which can be really hard on our emotional intelligence (EQ).

4. We squeeze something into every possible moment. It may seem hypocritical that we’re sometimes late even though the rest of the time we’re impatiently drumming our fingers, waiting for meetings to start on time. The problem is that we try to squeeze a task into every possible minute, and sometimes we overdo it. In our determination to avoid downtime, we sometimes inadvertently create downtime for other people.

5. We want you to get to the point.
Skip the long preamble; if we have questions, we’ll ask. There’s no need to waste time on the setup when you have something important to tell us–just tell us. The theme here is efficiency; we’re interested in hearing the main points so we can begin taking action.

6. We hate to wait. We don’t hate being stuck at a red light or cooling our heels in a doctor’s waiting room because we think we’re too good to wait. We just like to be efficient with our time and don’t like things getting in our way. Every minute spent waiting is a minute we could have spent doing something productive. It’s a minute that we’ll never get back.

7. We’re conscientious.
Like “later,” “good enough” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Things are either right or they’re wrong. And they always, always have to be right. No matter what we’re doing, we care too much to settle for mediocrity.

8. We multitask. We’re not being rude, and we’re not bored. We just have a sense that the value of our day is measured by how much we get done, and we accomplish more when we do two (or more!) things at once.

9. We have a tough time relaxing. Relaxation isn’t a measurable goal, and it feels like a waste of time when nothing is getting done. It’s very difficult for us to sit around and “just be”; instead, we prefer to be actively “becoming” whatever lies at the end of our current ambition. Anything else amounts to lost time.

10. We have an unrealistic sense of urgency. From our perspective, “now” is the only time that exists. There’s no sense in putting something off till another time. While that’s often a good thing, we tend to give trivial issues a greater sense of urgency than they deserve.

11. We follow a schedule. Our time is carefully orchestrated so that each day we accomplish what we intended. Again like “later,” “whenever” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Everything gets scheduled and added to lists, and we take great satisfaction in ticking all the boxes.

12. We’re restless. Our motors are always running, so when we have to idle, that excess energy manifests in various nervous habits, such as fidgeting or biting our nails. Don’t worry, we’re not freaking out. This is normal behavior for us.

Bringing It All Together

We know that we can be awfully hard on everybody, but we’re even harder on ourselves. This may be difficult to see because no one else is privy to the perfectionist that’s goading or berating our every move inside our heads. Just know this: We care–we care a lot–and we really are sorry if our personality makes us hard to get along with sometimes.

6 Things Every 20-Something Bride Needs To Know

For BRIDES, by Sandy Malone.

There are things every bride and groom should know, and then there are wedding planning tips that are specific to couples in a certain age range. Yes, you’ll probably be inviting guests of all ages to your wedding, but if you’re in your mid-20s, for example, there are some unique challenges presented by the general age-group of most of your friends.

So before you start announcing your wedding plans, or signing any contracts, consider the below kernels of wisdom for 20-something couples — putting these things in perspective before you start planning will make the process a whole lot easier… for everybody involved.

1. Don’t Neglect the School Calendar A number of your friends may still be in college, graduate, or professional school, so finding a wedding date that everyone can attend will be pretty much impossible. But keeping the general school calendar in mind will help you ensure more of your besties can RSVP in the affirmative. While your friends might not have school-age children yet, you may have some VIP guests (cousins or other family members) with tricky school schedules to work around as well.

2. Hotels Should Vary in Price While it’s cool to have everybody stay together at the same hotel or resort for your wedding weekend, keep in mind that you need to offer your guests a variety of price points. For many of your 20-something contemporaries, nobody is paying their credit card bills for them anymore, and the actual cost of your wedding weekend could be more than they earn in a paycheck, if you’re not careful.

3. Some Guests Might Not Know the Etiquette Rules Traditional wedding etiquette is fading out, but while you might realize how tacky it is to fail to RSVP, or ask to bring a date to a wedding, not all your younger guests have been privy to the same code of conduct. Expect to have to make a number of follow-up phones calls for guests who haven’t told you for certain if they accept the invitation, and be prepared with a polite, but negative, response when your friends ask if they can bring a plus-one.

4. Paper is Still King When it Comes to Weddings You can do as much as you like with your wedding website, hashtag-generators, and special weddings apps, but at the end of the day, in my professional opinion, you should provide the most important wedding information on actual paper — especially if you want anybody over the age of 35 to actually see it. Your 20-something friends might be happy checking the wedding schedule throughout the weekend from their phones, but your older relatives will feel completely lost.

5. Not Everyone Needs a Plus One Most of your friends do not require the privilege of a plus-one invitation to bring a date. Unless they’re in a serious, long-term relationship, or living with someone, it’s perfectly acceptable to just invite your friend without a guest. While your single friends serious might LIKE to bring a date, you have no obligation to extend that invitation — and incur the additional expense.

6. Compromising to Stay Within Your Budget is Crucial Many 20-somethings just simply aren’t able to afford the wedding of their dreams (unless they happen to be independently wealthy) — they just haven’t been working and saving up for that long. It’s difficult for someone in their 20s to afford day-to-day living expenses while still managing to pay for a “dream wedding” without some help (usually from their parents). Some couples might opt to have extra-long engagements in order to save up for the big day and be able to pay for most of it themselves. Regardless, it’s important for couples to remember that they’ll have to be open to compromising on what they want as well as setting a realistic wedding budget.

Judd Apatow Thinks Trump Will Run The Country Like It’s ‘The Apprentice’

Judd Apatow, frequent Donald Trump basher, is opening up about what he thinks life will be like once the president-elect takes office.

In an interview with The New York Times, the “Trainwreck” director suggested Trump will run the country like the reality competition show “The Apprentice,” which he so famously hosted.

“I watched an enormous amount of ‘The Apprentice,’” Apatow said. “Donald Trump sits in his office. He sends his kids to watch the teams do their missions. Then they come back and tell him what they think of it and then he makes an impulsive decision based on the information that Donald Jr. or Ivanka give him. That’s how he’s running the country.”

Apatow noted that he wasn’t particularly surprised when Trump won the election because, as he has stated before: the funniest candidate always wins

“I said it as a joke, but I think there’s something to it,” he said. “Reagan was funny. Bill Clinton was funny. Bush was funnier than Gore. Obama was funnier than probably anybody who’s ever run for office.”

In terms of Trump, Apatow thinks the former “Apprentice” host “has a demented sense of humor” and “is way funnier than Hillary Clinton.”

Apatow, a Clinton supporter, did make a point of expressing his thoughts about where the former secretary of state went wrong in her campaign, saying she “made a few enormous mistakes.”

“One of those mistakes, to me, was that you can’t get paid that much for speeches and go back into politics,” he said. “That has to be your victory lap — you cash in, you do the speeches and you’re done.”

With Trump being sworn into office on Friday, Apatow plans to alter the way he opposes the president-elect.

“I don’t think it serves a purpose to be against him,” he said. “It only serves a purpose to fight issue by issue.”

To read more from Apatow’s interview, head over to The New York Times

This Dinner Party Handbook Is The Perfect Way To Learn Queer History

An awesome new project is in the works that will provide fodder for an inclusive conversation about queer history while bringing people together in a dinner party setting.

“Serving Pride: The Queer History Dinner Party Handbook” is currently engaged in a Kickstarter campaign but its creators hope to have the handbook complete by June ― just in time for Pride 2017.

“Coming out is, in some ways, one of the most important political acts we do as queer people,” co-creator Joey Stern told The Huffington Post. “We say to friends and family ‘See me, see me like this.’ Learning about our history, teaching others about our history, thats how we say to each-other ‘See us, see all of us.’ It’s not just learning history, but learning it together that really solidifies that experience. You’re not alone, you’re part of vast and connected community.”

Resources like “Serving Pride” are more important than ever, in an era when its easy to lose sight of our history as LGBTQ people and our collective struggles.

Head here to check out the Kickstarter campaign and keep your eyes peeled for more from “Serving Pride: The Queer History Dinner Party Handbook.”

Adidas Golf Men’s A612 WHT White Performance Front Hit Cotton Golf Cap

Adidas Golf Men’s A612 WHT White Performance Front Hit Cotton Golf Cap

The annual company golf outing is coming up. Last year they gave away fruit baskets. Bummer! But this year you heard they’re giving away this adidas Men’s A612 WHT White Golf Performance Front-Hit 100% Cotton Relaxed Cap. Why are you so excited? Well, this adidas cap is made from 100% cotton twill making it great for the warmer weather. Twill is a weave that creates a diagonal pattern on the face of the fabric. This makes the fabric softer, more flexible, and less likely to wrinkle. The self-fabric sweatband of this white cap means it is made from the same material and helps to keep sweat off your brow and out of your eyes. A relaxed construction makes this golf cap comfy to wear. To adjust the fit, there’s a buckle in the back featuring the adidas logo. The dark underbill helps to reduce glare, so whether you’re on the greens, or on the job, you’ll be able to see. For a touch of style, the adidas logo is also featured on the back of this performance cotton cap. Maybe you’re thinking this men’s cap could use a little something. It can be custom embroidered with your or your company’s name and logo at the Working Person’s Store. With state-of-art technology, they can design your logo, or use your existing logo to enhance this adidas hat. There’s not anything necessarily wrong with fruit, but this adidas Men’s A612 WHT White Golf Performance Front-Hit 100% Cotton Relaxed Cap does sound a lot cooler. Good thing your company switched it up this year!Manufactured Sizes: One Size Fits Most

Merrell Shoes Women’s J32360 Waterproof Grey Athletic Slip-Resistant Hiking Shoes

Merrell Shoes Women’s J32360 Waterproof Grey Athletic Slip-Resistant Hiking Shoes

When the weather turns cold, we’d rather be cluttering up a Caribbean beach than hitting the hiking trails. So we’re lazy – what’s the big deal? But you’re not! Whether you’re just circling the block, or you’re out on a dawn-to-dusk expedition, these Merrell Women’s J32360 Grey Azura Low Waterproof Hiking Athletic Shoes will help you master all kinds of terrain. You’ll walk confidently knowing these Merrell shoes come with a secret weapon – the lightweight M Select GRIP outsoles. Made with a proprietary rubber/polyurethane compound, these outsoles are durable and sticky, so they grip where and when you need it. The 4 millimeter deep lugs release dirt and debris, so you won’t be bogged down. Bellows tongues also help keep debris out of the women’s shoes. With these traction and debris-busting features, you might just feel comfortable enough to hop off the path and blaze your own trail. And you’ll just be comfortable…period. The Ecoright and Lazy Foam footbeds in these waterproof shoes are 70% recycled open-cell Merrell Remember Me Foam. This is a memory foam material that’s soft and breathable for your comfort. Adding more breathability is the mesh lining that’s been treated with M Select Fresh odor control. This lining increases air circulation, keeping your feet cooler, drier, and less stinky. The trail less traveled is often-times a longer route. That’s why Merrell built these grey shoes with durable, yet lightweight, EVA midsoles. These midsoles absorb the impacts of every step you take, and they complement the shock-absorbing Merrell air cushions in the heels. The integrated butterfly thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) arch shanks add stability to reduce the workload of your feet. Whether you’re walking for five minutes or five hours, your feet will be less fatigued at the end. If you really want to feel like an animal on the trails, an 11-millimeter drop encourages you to land on your mid- or forefoot, giving you a more athletic, barefoot feel. And, finally, these Merrell shoes are waterproof. That’s right…don’t let a little rain make you reconsider your hike. Stomp in a puddle and giggle like a kindergartener. The waterproof Nubuck, suede, and mesh uppers give you soft, lightweight durability that keeps moisture out. As added insurance, Merrell also included a welded TPU film on the uppers to ensure total waterproofing, while increasing abrasion-resistance and strength. Brambles, thorns, and brush will cower in fear when you stride by them.If you want a pair of fluid, fast, and responsive hiking shoes, you’d better snatch these Merrell Women’s J32360 Grey Azura Low Waterproof Athletic Hiking Slip-Resistant Shoes today!Manufactured Sizes: 5-11, 12

The ‘Wheelspin’ Assignment

The ‘Wheelspin’ Assignment

In September 1977 when the lead singer and creative force of ‘Wheelspin’ walks out the rock band falls apart and becomes just another briefly famous and largely forgotten casualty of the pop music scene. In the same month, a Soviet diplomat is killed in a hit and run incident on a London street. Five months later a young man falls to his death from a north London roadbridge. These events are revealed as Martin and Anna Price search for the owner of a security box held by a Swiss bank. Whether they have a bearing on their investigation is unclear but it becomes apparent that they are not the only ones interested in the whereabouts of the former band member named Jase. A trail of duplicity and avarice commencing in the pop music world of the nineteen-seventies comes to light as the husband and wife team follow a number of leads which they hope will also reveal the whereabouts of one of the long missing Faberge Imperial Eggs.

CMOS Capacitive Sensors for Lab-on-Chip Applications

CMOS Capacitive Sensors for Lab-on-Chip Applications

1.1 Overview of Lab-on-Chip Laboratory-on-Chip (LoC) is a multidisciplinary approach used for the miniaturization, integration and automation of biological assays or procedures in analytical chemistry [1-3]. Biology and chemistry are experimental sciences that are continuing to evolve and develop new protocols. Each protocol offers step-by-step laboratory instructions, lists of the necessary equipments and required biological and/or chemical substances [4-7]. A biological or chemical laboratory contains various pieces of equipment used for performing such protocols and, as shown in Fig. 1.1, the engineering aspect of LoC design is aiming to embed all these components in a single chip for single-purpose applications. 1.1.1 Main Objectives of LoC Systems Several clear advantages of this technology over conventional approaches, including portability, full automation, ease of operation, low sample consumption and fast assays time, make LoC suitable for many applications including. 1.1.1.1 Highly Throughput Screening To conduct an experiment, a researcher fills a well with the required biological or chemical analytes and keeps the sample in an incubator for some time to allowing the sample to react properly. Afterwards, any changes can be observed using a microscope. In order to quickly conduct millions of biochemical or pharmacolo- cal tests, the researchers will require an automated highly throughput screening (HTS) [8], comprised of a large array of wells, liquid handling devices (e.g, mic- channel, micropump and microvalves [9-11]), a fully controllable incubator and an integrated sensor array, along with the appropriate readout system.

Little Black Sambo, a children’s book by Helen Bannerman, a Scot who lived for 30 years in Madras in southern India, was first published in London in 1899. This edition of the book has been illustrated by Florence White Williams. Sambo is a South Indian boy who lives with his father and mother, named Black Jumbo and Black Mambo, respectively. Sambo encounters four hungry tigers, and surrenders his colourful new clothes, shoes, and umbrella so they will not eat him. The tigers are vain and each thinks he is better dressed than the others. Charley Chatty and the Wiggly Worry Worm: A story about insecurity and attention-seeking

Charley Chatty and the Wiggly Worry Worm: A story about insecurity and attention-seeking

Charley Chatty likes to talk. Charley talks so much that her mouth gets dry but there’s just so much to say! “Why is the pavement brown?” “I have got two shoes. Everyone has two shoes.” “I can hear the radio. Who is on the radio? Why is there a button on the radio?” Sometimes, Charley’s imagination takes over and she tells stories about things that didn’t really happen. She doesn’t mean to but she likes how it makes her feel important and the wiggly worry worm inside her belly goes away. Written by a mum who understands, and her daughter (who also liked to tell tales), this is a story for children functioning at age 3-10.

Can Urban Streetwear Brands Make a Resurgence?

Don’t call it a comeback.
Before there was streetwear, there was urban streetwear, which consisted of brands that were a direct product of hip-hop culture.
Walk into any retailer today, whether it’s a big-box chain or a luxury department store, and there are traces, reinterpretations and sometimes replicas of urban streetwear pieces from brands such as Fubu, Phat Farm, Rocawear, Sean John and others that hit their peak during the late Nineties and early Aughts.
While brands including Guess, Nautica and Calvin Klein have capitalized on this Nineties trend with capsule collections targeting a younger consumer — Guess partnered with A$ AP Rocky and Nautica tapped 19-year-old rapper Lil Yachty  — urban streetwear brands have yet to do the same.

Lil Yachty in a piece from the capsule collection.

In some cases, it’s intentional as former teen favorites have opted to grow along with their customers and stop chasing a fickle young consumer. But for others, the industry says it’s impossible to make a major comeback given the current marketplace.
“I don’t want to make clothes for Millennials,” said Russell Simmons, who founded Phat Farm in 1992. “That’s not my brand.”
Simmons is instead concentrating on his new Los Angeles yoga studio and active line, which are both called Tantris

Run-DMC Files $50 Million Lawsuit Against Amazon and Wal-Mart for Trademark Infringement

Attorneys for the Run-D.M.C. brand have filed a $ 50 million lawsuit against Amazon Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Co., Jet.com and a few other outlets for trademark infringement and trademark dilution, among other things.
First reported by TMZ Thursday, the legal filing was made in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
The complaint, which includes numerous images of Run-D.M.C.-inspired products as they appeared on Amazon’s and Wal-Mart’s respective sites, alleges that the retailers are advertising, selling, manufacturing, promoting and distributing multiple Run-D.M.C. styled products. Eyewear, hats, T-shirts, wallets and patches are among the items referenced, some of which are said to use the Run-D.M.C. trademark. The complaint charges that the products being sold “confuse the public and suggest that Run-D.M.C. endorses the products.”
Homegrown in Hollis, Queens by Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels and Jason Mizell, Run-D.M.C. helped define hip hop culture in the Eighties. Mizell, better known as “Jam Master Jay,” was shot and killed in his recording studio in Queens in 2002. Simmons, whose brother is the serial entrepreneur Russell, is widely recognized as “Reverend Run.”
Run-D.M.C. has a registered trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The lawsuit claims that the Run-D.M.C. brand has produced revenue in excess

Mother of Pearl Pre-Fall 2017

A photo of Mother of Pearl creative director Amy Powney’s father, shirtless and sitting astride a butch looking motorbike in distressed jeans in the late Seventies in the Powney family’s backyard, sparked the inspiration for the brand’s last pre-fall collection before it adopts a see-now-buy-now model from next September, when it will show fall 2017 on the catwalk.
Papa Powney’s jeans informed the many denim pieces and raw edges throughout the collection, like boiler suits and a playful halter jumpsuit with floral halter straps, while the summertime blooms in the photo inspired the wildflowers and roses that appeared in botanical florals of daisies and roses.
Those florals were a pretty foil to the tougher denim pieces, charming in a cream dress with bared shoulders, fluted sleeves and frills under the bust; and looked striking in a black and red rose print wrap skirt, fastened with velvet ribbons and opening to reveal a contrasting pleated insert.
Heavy khaki cord was another Seventies nod, and looked great in an oversize biker jacket, while Powney’s signature sporty Nineties raver accents were seen in the gathered ankles of floral silk track pants and in the press-studs that opened up the front of nicely tailored trousers in floral

Where Are the Heroes? Arab Cinema in the Time of Extremism

2016-12-30-1483082638-7509504-686306737BD00156_2016_Dubai.JPG

We’ve recently been witness to the fact that politics can definitely be cinematic. Maybe not always in a good way, but it is. So is cinema political in return?

When we watch a film, we make a choice that is oftentimes political, because it involves gender, ethnicity, religion and our own personal beliefs. With our money, we help shape the choices Hollywood, Bollywood and world cinema filmmakers will make in the future. Say you watch the latest Fast & Furious film, or instead choose a cozy viewing of Jeff Nichols’ Loving. The first will help perpetuate a certain kind of hyper popular, testosterone filled moviemaking, while the latter will more likely inspire cultural understanding, across gender and race.

I believe every movie ticket we buy is a vote, and it may end up counting more in the long run than any vote in the US election.

So if we’re talking Arab cinema, well that term is undeniably charged, at its very roots. These days, the country of origin of a film and the theme of a particular movie are all inescapably political if we are talking modern Arab cinema.

At the recent Dubai International Film Festival, which neatly closes the year for filmmakers, film buffs and distributors from the MENA region, quite a few films that were in the line-up, as well as a couple conspicuously missing, all showed political choices. Personally, I felt discouraged coming into the festival, with so much chaos enveloping the Region and spilling beyond the Middle East, but in typical Dubai fashion, DIFF managed to ease my mind, somehow.

2016-12-30-1483091583-6599673-still_128380.jpg

Nearly six years after the revolutions of the Arab Spring, Egyptian filmmakers are finally steering clear of the topic and returning to what they do best, tell beautiful stories. Two films struck a chord with me at this year’s DIFF, Yousry Nasrallah‘s Brooks, Meadows and Lovely Faces, and Magdy Ahmed Aly’s Mawlana (“The Preacher”). Nasrallah’s films have always dealt with the humanity beneath the politics, and Brooks is no exception. It is an ode to “Love, food, freedom and dignity,” as Nasrallah himself introduced it at the Dubai screening and I’ll add, a damn great film about the sensuality of women in the Arab world. In a post-viewing interview I asked the Maestro if he feels that his film is political in any way, and he replied, “there is a political gesture in a period of austerity when death is glorified, in making a film which glorifies abundance, sexuality, sensuality, freedom — it is transgressive by default.” He concluded, “the world is becoming more and more conservative, all over, and making a film so irreverent to whatever is conservative is political; it’s something to remind you that we’re not like that, it is a film in the present tense.”

2016-12-30-1483091613-4633460-poster_132925.jpg Mawlana on the other hand is a movie that jumps out of today’s all-too-common headlines. Actually, the film screened at DIFF within twenty-four hours of the latest Coptic Christian church bombing in Cairo and there is a scene in the movie so eerily like real life that it could not be ignored or dismissed as just cinema. In fact, Mawlana is based on the novel The Televangelist by journalist Ibrahim Eissa who through his book aimed to show how religion can be misused for the sake of politics. Prevented from writing the story in 2009, Mawlana became a tale that could only be told through the revolution, but which thankfully does not delve into the usual turns of the uprising. And at the center of the film, stands a man, a religious man whose humanity makes the story thoroughly spellbinding.

From Syria these days there are a lot of documentaries told through the shaky handheld cameras of anti-regime rebels. The work of artists who have been persecuted by the Al Assad government and with their smartphones, small camcorders, by any means necessary, are portraying their side of the story. Usually helmed by a Western man, they are most often the stories of women such as Obaidah Zytoon as edited and viewed by Danish filmmaker Andreas Dalsgaard in The War Show, an interesting effort. From my own very personal prospective, a bit problematic because it only shows the politically correct side of the story, the one the media is already telling the world in their own narrative and in order to truly understand something I believe all sides must be at least discussed.

While Egypt may turn out to be OK after all, in Tunisia, the country which sparked the Arab Spring, there are politics at play even before you and I can get to watch a film.

2016-12-30-1483091648-6418324-poster_123606.jpg Hedi filmmaker Mohamed Ben Attia gently scoffed at me in Berlin when I pointed out that his film is quite courageous in its choice of images. A man and a woman having sex, in all its details, to me represents courage in Arab cinema regardless of its origin. He explained, “I was even reproached that the film is somehow too chaste; it was my choice to show a love story in a very natural way, maybe naive but that’s what happens when you fall in love. What is tough for Tunisian audiences is not so much to accept nudity or the sex scene, but the fact of having violence around all of that, adultery, incest or rape. But nudity and sex, they are used to watching American and French movies.”

So more risqué images, and hidden-in-plain-view themes that both praise and criticize Tunisia as a country and its people, should mean a freer cinema culture, right? Unfortunately not, as the recent Oscar nominations from the country pointed out. One committee — the official one — nominated Ridha Behi’s latest The Flower of Aleppo, while another committee popped up out of left field and nominated As I Open My Eyes by Leyla Bouzid, which premiered at the 2015 Venice Film Festival. That resulted in the disqualification of both films, and so Tunisia didn’t even enter in the running for a Foreign Language Oscar in 2017.

Palestine this year isn’t well represented either, slim pickings I’d say, and the decision to submit Hany Abu-Assad‘s The Idol to the Foreign Language Oscar race was more out of dire need than the value of the film itself. To yours truly, it’s not a surprise the film didn’t make the shortlist. The reigning triumvirate of great contemporary Palestinian cinema is made up of Abu-Assad, Annemarie Jacir and Najwa Najjar. So, while we eagerly anticipate projects from both Jacir and Najjar, which are currently in development, there isn’t much else to say about Palestinian cinema. At this year’s DIFF, two shorts and a medium sized feature about militant cinema in the Middle East, titled Off Frame AKA Revolution Until Victory were the only Palestinian film presence.

Lebanon will always mean for me the films of Nadine Labaki. I know, I can hear the collective moans, I’m selling the country short if I refuse to take into account other filmmakers. But I attribute to Labaki’s sultry Caramel my passion for Arab cinema and until she makes her next film, I’ll simply have to turn elsewhere, country-wise, to get my cinematic entertainment.

In fact, the previous two points highlight the fact that women filmmakers have always been a strongpoint of the Arab film industry, with numbers much higher than their Western counterparts. I asked Shivani Pandya, the Managing Director of DIFF about this incredible aspect of diversity, in a part of the world where the Western media would like us to believe women are kept down and at home. She admitted, “I’m super proud that in this part of the world we have such a high representation of women directors. People keep saying, what are you doing to promote this? And we really don’t have to do much. They [women filmmakers] want to compete on even keel, on an even platform, and that’s what we are providing them and have great numbers coming through. So at any given time we have more than 30 percent women directors. For me, it’s a great average!”

2016-12-30-1483091688-76647-poster_131012.jpg In the UAE alone, the numbers seem to be even higher. Year after year, women filmmakers like Nayla Al Khaja, Noujoum Al Ghanem and Amal Al Agroobi are showing the boys just how it’s done and their work is deeper, more soulful and better grounded than that of their male counterparts. Take for example Al Khaja’s latest Animal, a fifteen minute short she plans to develop into a full feature. Autobiographical and deeply personal, Animal tells the story of a family held in the psychological stronghold of a bully father — and is based on Al Khaja’s own experience growing up. I asked Al Khaja about being a kind of ambassador for her culture. She answered readily, “my husband said that to me, about being an actual ambassador for my country!” And continued, “because, he said, you present your country in a good way, it’s not too polished but it’s not too dark, it’s realistic” and anyway, Al Khaja added, “most filmmakers who are true to the nature of their artwork are ambassadors of sorts.”

Taking its cue from the Khaleeji tradition of storytelling, which is as ingrained in the culture of the UAE as family values, Arabic coffee and glistening sand dunes, the Dubai Film and TV Commission understood the importance of having a YouTube hub in the Region. After all, even a blockbuster venture like Bassem Youssef’s original Al-Bernameg (“The Show”) got its start as an internet show. I asked the Commissioner Jamal Al Sharif about this addition to the already healthy cinema industry the Commission is helping to build in Dubai. 2016-12-30-1483091934-7424720-2015120714494868555823210JamalAlSharifChairmanofDubaiFilmTVComissionheadshot2015.jpg

“The closest YouTube hub is in London and India and the Middle East didn’t have one. That’s why I worked with them for the past year and a half on positioning and creating a platform for them in Dubai Studio City, they will be there by the second quarter of 2017. We have already reserved the location for them, it’s going right now through the whole facelift of becoming a YouTube space. It’s going to be a destination where creators can go and create their content comfortably and YouTube will provide them with all the necessities: Studio, post-production, lighting cameras, and then a platform to distribute through their YouTube channel. You go in there and you are a creator, and you have an account with more than 10,000 in viewership and you have content. And they help you to create that content produce that content, do the post-production, use their equipment all at no cost. And of course, it’s an enabler. It’s a lounge when you’ll also meet other creators, who will help you.”

Al Sharif also brought up the need for cross pollination, and independent cinema of all cultures traveling across borders. “I miss watching foreign films, which I only watch on Emirates Airlines. The last couple of times when I traveled I saw Spanish and Italian movies, subtitled of course, and it’s beautiful! That’s the problem with the Arab world. I don’t see any single Arab content on any TV in the West, or even on their airlines. Sadly, they are only carried on our airlines — Etihad, Emirates and Qatar Airways. What about in the cinemas in the West? That’s the part that is missing. Even Japanese, Italian or Spanish films, you don’t see them in the theaters here. Why?” Arab cinema this year is once again conspicuously missing from the Oscar shortlist, and even more so in theaters.

Even in the Middle East, a film from Egypt, such as the recent Clash is only shown in Arabic without subtitles, thus excluding the entire expat contingency which makes up the majority of the population in a country like the UAE. Mohamed Diab’s Clash opened this year’s Cannes Un Certain Regard section where it definitely was subtitled for world cinema audiences.

To fill the gap of arthouse cinema, a concept still in need to catch on as far as numbers go in the Middle East, the task is left to organizations like Zawya in Cairo, which coordinates with existing movie houses across Egypt to create a series of art-house cinema screens across the country. In Beirut there is Metropolis, a labor of love where films like Planetarium starring Natalie Portman can alternate between the latest Xavier Dolan project and Café Society by Woody Allen. Last but not least, in the UAE there are two entities Cinema Akil and The Scene Club, both featuring programs that alternate venues, for the time being, and both founded by phenomenal women — Butheina Kazim and filmmaker Al Khaja respectively. Later in 2017, in fact Cinema Akil will move into its permanent location on Arserkal Avenue in the cool district of Al Quoz in Dubai, where cinema magic will be made on a regular basis. Inshallah.

Saudi Arabia has joined in with a slew of young, vibrant, enthusiastic filmmakers with a vision. My favorites include Haifaa Al Mansour, whose Wadjda created ripples around the world, and Mahmoud Sabbagh. Premiered in Berlin and showcased throughout the world, Sabbagh’s Barakah Meets Barakah is the kind of film that creates a movement and that movement may just turn out to be the birth of actual cinema houses in the restrictive Kingdom of Saudi Arabia — something only dreamed about till now. Incidentally, both films were submitted by Saudi to the Foreign Language Oscar race –for 2014 and 2017 respectively — though neither made the final cut. But the pride of a whole country to me speak louder than receiving a tiny golden statuette.

All in all, Arab cinema seems to be going steady and perhaps the best description of the parallel between this particular cinema of the world and its protective yearly home in Dubai, DIFF, was explained by the festival’s Chairman Abdulhamid Juma, to whom I’ll leave the last words of this piece. “I think we have changed gear. You know when you are driving on the highway and you are really cruising right? And everybody in that car is having a really useful and beautiful time. And music is playing.” He continued, “our music are the films, the passengers are the filmmakers, and there are a lot of people waving on the street and they are the audience watching the films. And it’s a beautiful sunny day, we have a destination, we know where we’re going but we are enjoying the ride.” He concluded wisely that for the year ahead his wish is to keep “the momentum, hopefully. I want you to tell me [next year] that there was a real change and it wasn’t just a lucky edition. We have left the city, and are now on the highway, and nothing can stop us because there is no traffic anymore.”

Don’t Know What to Do With Your Life? These Four Easy Steps Will Get You on Your Way

How do I really know what I want? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Alexandra Isenegger, Founder and CEO at Linkilaw, on Quora:

Choosing what you really want to do is not an easy thing. Unfortunately there is no simple method that will give you the exact answer. However, there are a couple of tasks that you can do to make it much easier. Let me tell you of some of them:

  • List: First off, let’s make a list. On the list, write everything that you are good at, what comes naturally to you, what you have a passion for, what your interests are, and so on. Write it all down! If you’re not sure what you’re interested in, think about it this way: if I had one hour free right now to do anything, what would I do? Would you play a sport, play a musical instrument, research about economics, or play a video game? Write all the things that come to your mind. What’s important here is that you should let it flow out of you and don’t spend time focusing and trying to make ideas come out of you. This is really based on your feelings, so don’t force it!

  • Research: Secondly, it’s time to do some research. Try to find out what working in those areas is like. Is it extremely stressful, do professionals work long hours, or is it more relaxed? Do you have to work in the office or can you work remotely? Find out as much as you can about the industry. If you can talk to some professionals, do so, because that will be the best source of information! Also feel free to mix your interests together. For example: you really enjoy sports but you aren’t good enough to play professionally. However, you also enjoy taking care of people or like the idea of being a doctor. Then mix the two together and go into sports medicine.

  • Elimination: Once you have all the information on all your interests, it’s time to be very honest with yourself. Start eliminating everything you do not like or know that you will not be able to do. For example if you know that you just cannot work for 18 hours straight and be in an office until very late, then eliminate any job that requires that. Do this for all the negatives that you can come up with. This really only works when you are honest, so no cutting corners! However, if you run out of interests, then you can make compromises. For example: let’s say that you know that you cannot work in an office for 14 hours a day; however, you would be able to do it if you were going out to meet clients each day for 3 or 4 hours. Hence, this might be something worth keeping in mind.

  • Testing: Finally, if you have followed the previous steps, you should hopefully be left with one or more good options. Now you want to actually go out and try it. No matter how much research you do, nothing will beat the experience of actually doing it! Go out and find an internship, apprenticeship, or job. Once you are out there in the field, you will get a deeper understanding and you can ask yourself: am I enjoying doing this? If yes, than congrats, it’s likely you have found what you want to do! If not, go back to your list and try something else. What if I only had one option left and its not working out for me? Well if that is the case then either go back to step one and try again or go back to step three and see where you can do some comprises. Then try it out!

No matter what, do what makes you happy and the money will sort itself out. I hope this helps you!

Couple Married 63 Years Dies Hours Apart: ‘I Know They Are Together’

After 63 years of marriage, Dolores and Trent Winstead of Nashville, Tennessee just couldn’t bear to be apart.

On Dec. 9 at around 9 p.m., Dolores, 83, died after suffering a brain aneurysm; the following afternoon at 4 p.m., Trent, 88, died after his heart had weakened from kidney failure.

“I know they are together and happy for eternity, and that is a comfort to me,” the couple’s daughter Sheryl Winstead told Today. “But I never in a million years dreamed I would walk out of the hospital without either one of them.”

The pair would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in January.

When Trent was hospitalized at St. Thomas West earlier this month for kidney failure, Dolores was seemingly in good health. One day at the hospital, she appeared to have fallen asleep in a chair at Trent’s bedside after complaining of a bad headache. It wasn’t until Sheryl tried to wake her up and couldn’t that the family realized something was wrong. Nurses tried to revive Dolores but her brain activity was gone after the aneurysm, according to the Washington Post. They hooked her up to a ventilator and eventually moved her and Trent into the same room.

For their final hours together, the couple held hands as they laid in beds side by side.

The couple has two kids, three grandkids and eight great-grandkids. Their son Eddie was the one who told Trent that Dolores had died.

“I had to lean down next to him, and just kind of tell him, ‘Mom has passed,’” Eddie told ABC affiliate WKRN. “When that happened, it was kind of like his whole spirit just changed.”

He continued, “I told him, I said, ‘Dad, if you want to go be with Mom, that’s quite alright with Sheryl and I.’”

Losing both Trent and Dolores in such a short span of time was undoubtedly difficult for the family, but knowing the couple didn’t have to live long without one another brought them some comfort.

“It’s like God made their travel arrangements and they went together,” Sheryl told WKRN. “It’s just really sweet.”

Watch the video above for more on their story.

Someone Literally Turned 2016 Into A Horror Movie

Everyone’s been saying it: 2016 was one traumatic year.

It’s the year we lost David Bowie, Harper Lee, Prince, and Princess Leia and her mother. It’s the year the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. It’s the year Donald Trump was voted president of the United States. It’s the year Harambe was shot.

These past 12 months have played out like a surreal horror film ― so Friend Dog Studios turned the year into one, in the form of a fake movie trailer.

The comedy studio premiered the trailer Wednesday for “2016: The Movie,” and it hits way too close to home.

The trailer’s story touches all the shitty things that happened this year, including notable deaths, exploding phones and Trump’s “locker room talk” defense.

If there’s anything this movie trailer does, it confirms that we’re not just going crazy: This year felt bad universally.

And whatever you do, don’t trust the boyfriend in the video above when he says, “It’s OK. It’s not like it could get any worse.”

On Agnes Martin and Mapping the Pathways Out of Schizophrenia and Obsession

Agnes Martin remains on view at New York’s Guggenheim Museum through January 11, 2017. See the museum website for details and location.

Installation View: Agnes Martin, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, October 7, 2016- January 11, 2017. Photo: David Heald © Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation

It isn’t enough to say that Agnes Martin crafted what may be the perfect minimalist paintings. Rather, we do her life and work a far greater justice by acknowledging that in her own complex yet elegantly psycho-therapeutic solution to grappling with schizophrenia, Agnes Martin imposed on her life and art an obsessional ritual program of mapping successive pathways to renewed sanity and persistent order in her life. Schizophrenia and obsession were the treacherous Scylla and Charybdis that life forced Martin to circumnavigate. And she ultimately managed not only to find her way through the twin dangers, she did it by converting her personal and plaguing disconnection with space and discontinuity with time into a structural mapping of the most elegant and minimally-contained mannerist art likely ever produced.

I only partially mean mapping as a charting and identification of space. For Martin it is a mapping of the mind (or the painted mind) that secures personal and social connectivity and continuity — the very things that schizophrenia would deny her through its severely-imposed disconnection and discontinuity. “Mapping” is a concept that comes from R.D. Laing’s theory of the territorial claim on social roles that compel people to adopt lifestyles that might or might not fit them. It’s a mapping of lifestyles that comes with considerable social pressures, in terms of the mapping of individual vs. collective expectations — one mapped over the other. But Martin was quite literal in her interpretation of theories, in her work, mapping becomes a meticulous and exacting physical labor that enables her to counter the disconnection of schizophrenia, while embracing the safety of obsessive compulsion — all with the meshes of the grid. In her own complex yet elegantly psycho-therapeutic solution to grappling with schizophrenia, Agnes Martin imposed on her life and art the structure and motif of the grid as an infinite and eternal if obsessional ritual program of mapping successive pathways to recovered and renewed sanity and persistent order in her life.

While Martin was alive there was no public mention of the artist’s diagnosis, though we are told that most of her friends and acquaintances knew. I first discovered her work as an undergraduate in the mid 1970s and soon after encountered her work in several New York shows and read numerous reviews throughout the 1980s and 1990s, when her acclaim was becoming a kind of apotheosis in the artworld after long years of her marginalization. I remember no mention of a disorder or affliction of any kind in all my discussions with artists and art professionals about her. There certainly was no telltale sign of the disease in her paintings, what counts among the most disciplined and rigorously programmatic work in the history of Modern Art. Only with the release of two seminal books on the artist and her work in the past two years did the public come to know of the extent of Martin’s malady. The first of these books, Agnes Martin, is the exhibition catalogue that has been shared by Tate Modern, London, The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and The Guggenheim Museum in New York and was written by several curators and critics. The second, and the more intimately revealing biographically, is Agnes Martin: Her Life and Art, by Art In America critic, Nancy Princenthal. Published in 2016 by Thames and Hudson, the book recently won the 2016 PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography. Both books confirm the rumors that began to circulate since Martin’s death in 2004.

Princenthal has voiced opposition to considering schizophrenia as having much to do with Martin’s work. Yet her choice of words leaves room for doubt. In an interview with Carolina A, Miranda of The Los Angeles Times, Princenthal relayed that Martin made it clear that she believed her illness had nothing to do with her work.

It is understandable that Martin would believe this. It is also admirable that the people who continue to care about the artist’s reputation these twelve years after her death would guard against it being diminished by a mental disorder. But such sentiments, despite their good intentions, don’t help society to overcome the stigma of Schizophrenia even for those who, like Martin, succeeded in building a reputation for possessing a formidable artistic insight and commitment. It is also hard to imagine an analyst accepting the defensive stance that Princenthal and other of Martin’s champions assume or relay in discounting the influence of the disease. The fact is that Martin covered for her disease successfully enough for us to want to continue doing it for her by airing her discovery that working in the studio on a regiment of continual, seemingly ceaseless, variations on grid was, in addition to her medication, a liberation from her disease.

It is my personal view that Martin did even more: that it was not just in spite of the disease, but likely because of it that she made great art — without implying that Martin would not have been a great artist had she not contracted the disease. Yet the circumstance of her disease no less impelled Martin to compose her own unique if compulsive-obsessive ritual of mapping a linear and chromatic grid that stands in for the unity missing from Martin’s life. We know the utility of the grid helped Martin to further alleviated the duress of her medically and personally managed schizophrenia enough to continue it to the age of 92.

What makes Martin’s triumph even more formidable is that, as she was entering into the last decade of her life and work, neuroscience was confirming that schizophrenia wasn’t just a psychological and cognitive disorder, but a physical disorder of the brain. In a study conducted and published in 1995 with the article, “Schizophrenia: A Disconnection Syndrome?”, the neuroresearchers Karl J. Friston and Christopher D. Frith published in Clinical Neuroscience their conclusion that “some schizophrenic phenomena are best understood in terms of abnormal interactions between different areas”, not only at the levels of cognitive and sensorimotor functioning, as plagued Martin, but “at the level of physiology and functional anatomy”.

The evidence is significant because it frees the schizophrenic from the popular view that somehow the individual is responsible for bringing on the disease herself. Or in the case of a famous artist, that she would have heightened and romanticized, perhaps even exaggerated her schizophrenia as an asset to her career. (I know of no one who knew Martin that thought this about her, but it is the kind of malicious fictions that celebrated figures attract.)

At the same time, the establishment of a physical cause for schizophrenia emphasizes that it is a disease that becomes a part of who the individual is to the extent that every action either becomes a struggle with or a victory over the disease each and every day. As life even for the well supplies an ample array of adversity that defines or denies the strength of individuals, so does schizophrenia supply or deprive the individual according to the many circumstances particular to that life. The limitations imposed on Martin would suggest their own counter measures which she would apply in her own uniquely brilliant way. Ultimately, Princenthal admits that she thinks the Schizophrenia did affect Martin’s work positively and negatively. “She had a number of psychotic breaks. She did hear voices — she had aural hallucinations — and she was subject to them throughout her life. She took medications. She undertook talk therapy. These were constraints.”

Without further disclosures, we can only surmise by her success and artistry that for Martin, drawing horizontal and vertical lines, whether in grids or stripes, would be sanity-saving exercises that imposed the order and discipline required to achieve the longevity to make an unparalleled body of minimalist art. Similarly, while progressing from one chromatic value to the next, or when working in monochromes, from one shade and density to the next, Martin not only imposed a discipline onto her daily routine, she also, in reinforcement of her medications, mapped a continuity onto her habits that offset whatever inclination she might have to lose a sense of her own thoughts, speech, ability.

For a mind and body plagued by a disorder that imposes severe fragmentation and continual renewal on each and every one or the habits and endeavors of everyday life, turning to a structural repetition ritual was a solace and a support for Martin. In this way, Martin did learn to make the best of her schizophrenia and her obsessive compulsion for repetition. It was the only acceptable choice. For by the late 1970s, making stylistically breaks from the serial programming of her earlier work was being encouraged by the informed art society to which she belonged. But breaks from routines are what the schizophrenic fears, as the kind of breaks in temporal continuity and spacial connectivity that schizophrenia imposes also brings fear and confusion, and for the severe schizophrenic, hallucinations. Ultimately Martin would find that the breaks in her art from one work to the next could be contained with the motif of the grid to provide a foundation to build from — however immanently subject to dissolution that foundation might in the end prove. In Martin’s case, the foundation, the grid, for her work never dissolved. And we may attribute that to the positively-obsessive ritual of mapping space with grids that supply connectivity to compensate for a disease of disconnection.

Each painting was a mending of the breaks and tears in her vision; a memorial to the ruptures of continuity in time. On good days the paintings became meshes of reality. In making paintings so obsessively dominated by parallel lines or grids, we can be sure that Martin likely experienced them far differently than we do when viewing them, for feeling them emerging in her nervous system. If we wish to attempt to see them as Martin did, we might try to experience them as unified compositions, planar maps composed of myriad separate domains. Her schizophrenia accounts for why Martin chose not to represent gestalt visualizations that her minimalist colleagues did (Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Robert Morris, Jo Baer) — that is, to produce paintings or sculptures that we can summon to our mind’s eye because they are simple geometric unities — triangles, circles, rectangles — or are seamless, illusionistically-drawn, painted or sculptural volumes — cones, pyramids, cubes, spheres. Instead, Martin ritually painted broken up surfaces that from a distance look to be solid and unified planar fields, but upon close inspection reveal themselves as meticulously, truly compulsively-ordered, drawn and painted, programmatically-interrupted fields with rows and columns textured over with finely-brushed washes of muted color that upon close examination reveal shimmering yet minute brush strokes.

The difference may be simple to the well-ordered mind, but to the individual plagued by schizophrenia, even when successfully readjusted by a regiment of medication and therapies as have been relayed to us, such obsessively-mapped compositions even in their imposed order are symbolic of a sustained victory over the forces of disconnection and disunity perpetually and imminently threatening a reign of chaos on all that Martin rigorously strove to bring into being.

This is why it isn’t enough for us to say that Agnes Martin had no equal in terms of composing shimmering formalist constructions of interstitial intricacy with a faithful commitment to execution to her personal visions. In this second decade after her death, Martin’s triumph as an artist who struggled with schizophrenia should be a bold declaration that forever banishes the hushed apologies, denials and silences of her peers during her lifetime, even when it was respectful rather than shameful.

Shrinking from acknowledging Martin’s disease is tantamount to believing the disorder became her master. It did not, however much it threatened to at various times throughout her life. In fact it is the exact opposite. Martin, though fighting a battle with schizophrenia for most of her adult life, became the master of her disease, however tentatively and with however many disruptions, to the extent that, despite that it continued to make Martin suffer, she was able to continually convert her struggle with discontinuity, disconnection and disruption with a counteractive, daily, and programmatic exercise raised to artistic creation. It may not be a proof, but the fact that Martin lived to be 92 is indication that her art is at least one reason why she did not suffer the demise of so many schizophrenics, especially women, given that the suicide rate for women with schizophrenia is alarmingly high.

For a lesser artist, schizophrenia could have been a breakdown of the relationship between the artist and her art; between the signifiers she is to inscribe and the faculty that inscribes them. Whether the lines and hues she mapped out on canvas or paper were to be perceived as material objects, diagrammatic representations or a visual language of communication, the schizophrenic impetus would not allow the work, especially in the early phases of the disease, to proceed as a simple temporal flow of visual data or language as it would for the well individual. Rather it would impose a barrage of discontinuity and disconnections, whereby all forms of articulation and interpretation, linguistic, visual, symbolic, are severely impaired; for even the most simple sentence thought silently to oneself must move through time. The language effects of schizophrenia include the breakdown of all memories of the past, perceptions of the present, and inferences for the future. While medications may restore the brain’s synapses, daily discipline also has to gradually increase to ensure the body’s facility to maintain and sustain the skills that had been built up when she was young and well (or at least more capable). would have to be rebuilt and redirected for new paths of capability, if not growing them into altogether new skills.

From what we are now being told, Martin’s regimen was exercised from the late 1960s up to her death in 2004. It is news that reassures that Martin had succeeded in besting her disease despite its ever presence. Martin’s bouts of schizophrenia may in fact have compelled her to resort to a ritual, or even an obsession, with repetitively replicating the grid in compositional structures signifying varying levels of tension and relaxation. In fact the schizophrenia would have made the compulsively repetitive and assured formula of the grid a comforting and structural assurance in the face of a life that faced complete break down of continuity. For the schizophrenic, maintaining a continuous present is necessary for retaining a self-identity, and for sustaining basic linguistic formulation and meaning.

Even for an artist who is well adjusted, the minimalist endgame paradoxically supplies a potentially endless continuation and repetition of variations on a grid that would not merely relieve tedium with the format but energize it. Certainly for the lover of minimalist composition, while scaling the Guggenheim’s ramp upward Martin’s compositions echo the inlets and niches of Wright’s rising compartments and niches. And really,Wright’s white spiral never seemed better reinforced by the desert art it contained, what with the architect and the painter sharing minimalist parallelism, and eons-old metaphorical contrasts and complements (Wright’s seashell spiral, Martin’s desert mindscapes) that collaboratively and thrillingly inferred an invisible continuity and repetition to infinity. That Martin had brilliantly mapped her work with architectural surroundings in mind never seemed more assured. Simultaneously, the message of both the museum and the art suggested all the discontinuity and disorder in the world could not disrupt this union of artist and architect. The apotheosis came with the final painting of Martin’s life, placed perfectly at the end of Wright’s spiral, and it was as exhilarating as it suggested perfection.

Standing before Martin’s last painting compelled me to wonder about Martin’s personal testimony to having precise visions of the work before she is about to execute it. Visions, of course, are the curse of the schizophrenic. But they also have been mythically considered the mystic’s claim to salvation — the “all the way to heaven is heaven” ticket of which Catherine of Siena spoke. But Martin’s visions, she herself tells us, were of her works she was yet to make, and made. As if flashes of her future visited her. It is no doubt the unique condition of Martin’s schizophrenia that each vision of her work came to her, as she states in one of the films playing on the Guggenheim ramp, in the size of a postage stamp. Martin then made it her responsibility to recreate that vision iconically on paper or canvas as precisely as was within her power.

Given that in a secular age a culture’s most illuminating mystics are found among its artists and poets, we should not be surprised to learn that the mystics of ages past were prone to having distinct and vivid visions in manners consistent with schizophrenia. If it seems strange that a present day “mystic” (Martin would probably disdain the term being applied to her) would be so inclined to visions of a stationary and formal import, we might consider that the abstract Tantric art of Rajasthan made between the 5th-to-17th centuries appears very much like certain 20th-century paintings based on planar geometry. For much like Martin’s signature art, the Tantric art of geometric abstraction is particularly well suited to launching and sustaining the ritual practice of meditation and mental liberation.

In reflecting on the history of schizophrenia and obsession as a topics, themes and impetus in the last century-and-a-half in art, it is altogether ironic that though the issues and theories of schizophrenia would become a sometimes obsessional motivation for much of the significant art made under the banner of Modernism, we still shy away from openly discussing the effects schizophrenia has on the art made by artists afflicted. Considering the major contributions of schizophrenia and obsession in the modernist cannon of art history enable us to appreciate both how schizophrenia theoretically informed many of the artists Martin knew personally and likely contributed to the niche she found for herself in art history at the same time that her life mirrored, if not embodied, much of that history.

Of all the literature available on mental health, it is R.D. Laing’s devastating criticism of the social and institutional malevolence toward schizophrenics, and his call more personalized care, that Martin appears to emulate. In fact, it can be said that Martin’s life and art serve as a paradigm for all the best that Laing predicted a schizophrenic could achieve outside of the institutionalized setting that once lobotomized, imprisoned and shock-induced patients with mental disorders. But despite the divide between therapeutics and aesthetics, all of the giants of classical psychological theory — Freud, Jung, Lacan, Klein — still have much to contribute to the art historical review of the art made under their once fashionable influence. That includes controversial speculations that are of greater facility to the artist and critic of formal and iconographic visual systems of art, symbolism and myth, than to medical, therapeutic and analytic professionals.

After Picasso and Braque found inspiration for Cubism in the simultaneous, multiple perspectives of schizophrenics cited in early literature on schizophrenically-disconnected visualization, the Dada and Surrealist artists found Freud’s theories of psychosis equally useful in terms of applying his notions of the fetish and the uncanny to their crafting a revolutionary new visual and conceptual art. The Surrealists particularly admired Freud when he described the circumstances whereby people of moral conscience find themselves awakening to desires that they know should be suppressed in accordance with the moral authorities of their period’s social enclaves. Freud also proposes that even the most conscientious people unconsciously yet willingly channel forbidden desires into fetishistic (that is protective and disguised) condensations of psycho-somatic energy. The more superstitious and fearful (those often of a religious caste) perceive the fetish to be their desire’s effacement in accordance with the presiding authority or faith.

The Surrealist in particular championed Freud for revealing that we unconsciously protect our forbidden desire for random and impersonal genitalia by transferring that desire to objects that can pass inspection with the moral authorities of the day — the fetishistic hat whose folds secretly arouse memory of and desire for the furtive vulva; the cigar whose heft fills the void and yearning for the real but absent penis. Although not schizophrenic in themselves, the fetish and the uncanny become full-scale delusions in schizophrenia. In the world of contemporary art, however, what seems delusional in the everyday world becomes a marketable commodity in the high-financed world of the secondary and auction market for art, as witness the success of such artists as Robert Gober and Louise Bourgeois, both of whom extensively fetishize their art.

More applicable to Martin’s art and schizophrenia is the development of the collective unconscious by Carl Jung, given that the grid that Martin favored above all else is a structure of the unconscious order. It may be a prominent graduate thesis that one day demonstrates how the grid in Martin’s paintings is the visual and formal equivalent of Jung’s collective unconscious. As any animator or 3D artist can today attest, just as all conceptual contents proceed from the collective unconscious, all visual, formal variants proceed from the collective grid, or what is today called vector graphics in digital visualization effects and animations. Similarly, the interpretation of these visualizations proceed as new formulations of very ancient archetypes — images and objects initially dreamed up by the unconscious mind, and that through Jung’s investigation of the visions and voices that plagued his schizophrenic patients, came to inform us today of why we so readily appreciate the same motifs, however moderately evolved, as did our Paleolithic and Neolithic ancestors. Which is why Jung had such a strong impact on the earliest Abstract Expressionists with whom Martin identified herself even more than with the Minimalists. We communicate with, and perpetuate our languages and arts through the inventions of our ancient ancestors by modernizing their motifs for new generations.

Although the Surrealist’s eroticization of schizophrenia seems not to have impressed upon Martin’s work, it certainly did on the mature Baziotes and the early Pollock, Krasner, Gorky, Rothko and Gottlieb. All of these artists grew out of Surrealist explorations of schizophrenia, particularly the automatism that inspired the theories of Andre Breton and Georges Bataille for presuming to lead more directly to the unconscious than planned out and theorized art. It was a generation that imparted to Martin the understanding that the immediacy of associative symbolism is more directly reflective of the unconscious than are planned and studied sketches. Jung’s comparison of the schizophrenic mind when awake to the dream states of the healthy also introduced the notion that the collapse of identity in the schizophrenic disconnection is also similar to the fluidity of identity in dreams. Such free association of personas in dream states led Jung to proclaim that all characters in dreams represent facets of the dreaming self. Hence a fluid or associative identity assumption became a technique found amply in the works of such artists as Frida Kahlo and Francisco Clemente, in which the self-portrait is grafted onto rival characters, even animals.

A decidedly postmodern generation that ascended with Pop Art montaged together disparate, seemingly unrelated image vocabularies championed by Frederic Jameson as publicly modeling the schizophrenic who does not have our experience of temporal continuity, but is condemned to live a perpetual present. In such a present none of the individual moments or experiences in a life have any connection other than streaming by like a barrage of media sounding and showing off without its contents truly being seen or heard. The Conceptual Art and Performance Art movements of the late 1960s and 1970s made much about obsession, compulsion, and break downs, particularly such artists as Vito Acconci, Chris Burden, Ana Mendieta and Dennis Oppenheim, and in the 1980s, Karen Finley, Kiki Smith and Sue Williams. Upon acquainting ourselves with the extensive correspondence between theory and art, it seems preposterous to perennially cite the mimicry of schizophrenia by non-schizophrenic artists and then step around the true schizophrenic experiences of Agnes Martin out of respectful deference or cynical renumeration. But if none of the theorists so far mentioned apply to Martin’s art (and they don’t in any way substantially) we find ourselves asking, whose theory does?

I believe that author is R.D. Laing, who no one concerned with Schizophrenia in the 1960s and 1970s did not know well. In “The Politics of the Family” (1969), Laing describes his notion of ritual ‘mapping’, which both well people and sick people largely unconsciously do, but do differently. In brief, Laing writes “A person ‘maps’ some accepted social definition of reality onto his or her experience and then acts as if that map reflects his or her experience. Or else feels terribly oppressed and unseen, if the personal experience is very different from the ‘mapped’ pseudo-experience.”

2016-12-30-1483057688-4813952-012.png

Agnes Martin, Untitled, 2004, Acrylic on canvas, 152.4 x 152.4 cm. Collection of Mitzi and Warren Eisenberg © 2015 Agnes Martin/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York

Laing wasn’t referring to a visual mapping. It was a mental and social, really a habitual, mapping of concepts and experiences that were regarded normal within a culture, yet are actually obsessively retentive and often undesirable, even detested. “Call experiential structure A, and public event B. Sometimes the product of A and B, in a marriage ceremony, is a marriage. Both people are married in all senses at once. . . One function of ritual is to map A onto B at critical moments, for example births, marriage, deaths. In our society many of the old rituals have lost much of their power. New ones have not arisen…. To preserve convention, there is a general collusion to disavow A when A and B do not match. Anyone breaking this rule is liable to invalidation. One is not supposed to feel married if one has not been married. Conversely, one is supposed to feel married if one ‘is.’ If one goes through a marriage ceremony, and does not feel it is ‘real’, if it did not ‘take’, there are friends and relatives to say: ‘Don’t worry, I felt the same, my dear. Wait until you have a child. . . Then you will feel you are a mother,’ and so on. . . . So one feels, perhaps, frightened or guilty, and probably wishes to disavow A; to take refuge in B, where everything is as everyone says.”

From such a notion of social mapping, it seems perfectly reasonable that a visual artist faced with schizophrenia, and especially a visual artist who was a lesbian who sought a ritual mapping of human connection that is unlike a ritual mapping of heterosexual marriage, would turn to the idea of ritual mapping as something that provides comfort and control that she lacks over life yet which she finds in a ritually-repeated routine. That ritual routine for Martin proved to be a ritual visual mapping with lines and shadings conducive to making a visual map. And what better map would be available to a person who struggles to maintain continuity and connection than the structural guide of the map, that ultimate symbol and program of connection and continuity — the grid. The obsessionally-repeated ritual of mapping a grid to a person who has structural difficulty in maintaining ritual proved to be Martin’s epiphanic moment and process. Martin’s ritual of charting out the map of the grid over and over until continuity and connection becomes so habitual, so indoctrinated in the muscles of the hands and arms, so engrained in the retinas and pupils of the eyes, so emblazoned upon the mind, even the mind of the schizophrenic she was. What better mapping, year after year, decade after decade, could better anchor the schizophrenic artist, especially an artist also inclined to obsessive-compulsive repetition, than the daily mapping of the grid?

How To Create Quiet Spaces In Your Home

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com
Contrary to popular belief, not all introverts are homebodies. I myself love getting out on the streets and observing all the personalities colliding around me—and I’m the kind of person who gets nervous about interactions to the point where a little small talk with a cab driver puts me in cold sweats. However, a quiet, introverted mind does crave a safe, calming space built just for thinking and rejuvenation, especially after enduring a barrage of stimuli from the external world.

Creating that area within the home requires designing (and living) with intention. We tend to treat our homes as dumping grounds—not only for our possessions but also for our overly-tired bodies. I know that upon arrival home at the end of a long day, if my home feels uncomfortable, cluttered, or noisy, I tend to feel adrift. As an introvert, if my place of retreat is threatened, I can be easily thrown for a loop, and the quality of my writing and a clear headspace will be the first two casualties. To truly reap the benefits of a quiet space, you’ll need to learn the habit of treating your home with reverence and love, becoming more thoughtful about where you place items and how you spend your time inside.

Locate quiet within your space

Turn off your TV, your music, and your phone, and listen. Hear that humming from your refrigerator? The whoosh of the air conditioning running? The ticking of the clock? A lot of appliances and devices let off excess noise we don’t notice during our day-to-day routines. I’m a person who suffers from mid-level anxiety, meaning my brain is always anxiously ticking off a number of thoughts, and that excess ambient noise just adds to the neural confusion.

To combat this, I’ve tried incorporating more quiet spaces into my home. I turn off unnecessary devices—like DVD players, video consoles, TVs, and digital clocks—that add ambient noise, light, and heat pollution. Smoothly-running, new appliances help. If your dishwasher is old and noisy, get it repaired so that it will run quietly in the background. Alternatively, replace clanky appliances with new, quieter-running models, which may be more energy-efficient as well. Performing some acoustic investigation here is key, so make sure to unplug and listen carefully to the different spaces in your interiors.

If you have especially loud housemates or neighbors or a lot of street noise from outside, you may also want to consider soundproofing your interiors. This can be as simple as weatherstripping around doors and acquiring a carpet to soak up noise or as advanced as adding acoustic ceiling tiles. Homes are generally built with little to no soundproofing. In fact, interior wall construction unintentionally amplifies noise from room to room, so it’s worth investigating ways to block outside noise, whatever your time or budget.

Quiet means creating space

There’s a reason we call a busy design “noisy.” In the world of home decor, “quiet” and “minimal” can often go hand and hand. While there’s been many an article written on the valors of decluttering, you don’t necessarily need to go along with serious devotees who take the practice to extremes. For an introvert, particularly one drawn to quiet reflection, a too-stark room can be a prison sentence. Overly-empty spaces provoke a strong reaction in me, triggering feelings of abandonment and isolation. I live toeing the line between solitude and loneliness, so having furniture and decor that remind me I’m comfortable and cared for is key.

In fact, severe rooms, particularly those with many hard angles, have been shown to be associated with negative emotions, activating the amygdala (your flight/fight/freeze response center). We’re far more likely to thrive in a soft space with plenty of rounded surfaces. Striking a balance between organization and the chaos life can bring is the battle, but clean surfaces and uncrowded spaces are major strategical wins. Clutter, after all, can elevate our cortisol levels—the stress hormone—making a quiet mind harder than usual to achieve.

Introverts will be most comfortable in spaces where furniture is clustered in nooks rather than organized around the perimeter—as it would be for a large social gathering. That being said, tasks that involve heavy concentration, such as reading, writing, and design, will be better performed in a single room—that way you can shut off outside distractions at your discretion.

Ideal spaces for introverts

Given plenty of quiet time for reflection, introverts are generally well aware of their own preferences. That knowledge of self serves them well in designing their ideal places of rest in the home, especially because beyond a few standard principles, decor is often about the subjective connection we have with colors, objects, and items. Color, for instance, is so personal that even psychologists can’t agree on how it affects us. Brain scans offer mixed data on how we react to the color red, for instance.

Light is also controversial. I’m among those who feel trapped and weighed down without windows, but others may feel exposed in a home with too many openings. However, for my type of introversion, I find that an area that at least suggests a sense of seclusion is key. Seclusion can be fostered by setting up “thinking outposts” in quiet corners by windows or alcoves and making them your own. Fill them with tiny touches that speak to you alone and provoke thought. I used to keep a drawer filled with old black-and-white photos I’d bought from a thrift store so I could imagine the inner lives of the people in them. Find items that connect you to your deepest self.

Too often, homeowners feel they must design their homes to appeal to convention, but this is untrue. The designer that bucks tradition, choosing instead to listen to their own instincts when organizing a space, will find that even the process of redecorating can be a journey toward a deeper sense of self.

Billie Lourd Inherited ‘Strength’ Of Carrie Fisher And Debbie Reynolds, Stepfather Says

Billie Lourd, daughter of Carrie Fisher and granddaughter of Debbie Reynolds, lost both of those family members this week. While Lourd has yet to comment publicly on the sudden deaths, her stepfather, Bruce Bozzi, shared a supportive message over Instagram on Thursday.

Alongside a photo of the 24-year-old’s graduation from New York University in 2014, where she is shown posing with Reynolds and Fisher, Bozzi offered words of praise for all three women.

“It’s an honor to be your Stepfather,” he began, recalling the big day. “[At] Yankee Stadium your mom and I laughed our asses off, as she kept one fantastic line coming after the other,” he continued.

“I promise I will always be [a good stepfather] & the strength of these women live so vibrantly in you. I’ve been lucky enough to see this for a decade! Many decades to come…..heaven just got a shit load more fun!!!!”

Bozzi married his longtime partner, agent Bryan Lourd, in October. Lourd was married to Fisher, who died Tuesday, in the early 1990s before his divorce from the “Star Wars” actress revealed him to be gay.

Lourd became the managing director of CAA, a top talent agency; Bozzi’s family runs the high-end Palm chain of restaurants.

With parents and grandparents like those, it’s not surprising that Billie Lourd went into acting herself. She currently stars as Chanel #3 in Ryan Murphy’s “Scream Queens” alongside Lea Michele, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Grande and her rumored boyfriend Taylor Lautner. Each of those co-stars shared supportive messages for Lourd over Instagram.

“My mother’s heart goes out to this exquisitely talented young woman,” wrote Curtis. “Her mother’s spirit and talent lives on in her and I’m sure all of Carrie’s fans and friends will give her space and privacy.”

The young actress will also be reprising her small role from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” set for 2017 release.

While Lourd has been understandably silent, her uncle, producer Todd Fisher, told news outlets that his mother, Reynolds, said she wanted “to be with Carrie” before her own death on Wednesday. On Thursday, he posted a small tribute to his mother and his sister over Twitter.
